Learn about Lawn and Garden Equipment exchange programs, which provide real emission benefits by exchanging conventional, high-polluting, gasoline-powered commercial lawn and garden equipment with zero-emission equipment.
There is no funding being offered by the Air District for upgrades to lawn and garden equipment at this time. Sign up to receive email notifications about program updates if funding becomes available. The California Air Resources Board, in partnership with CALSTART, is offering voucher incentive funding to small businesses and sole proprietors to upgrade professional landscaping equipment to zero-emission alternatives. Funding is provided through the California Off-Road Equipment, or CORE, Program. Visit the CORE website for more information.
The following programs provided emission-reduction benefits and reduced air pollution by replacing conventional high-polluting gasoline-powered commercial lawn and garden equipment with zero-emission equipment.
In 2014, the Lawn Mower Exchange Program offered Bay Area residents a $145 rebate on the purchase of new cordless zero-emission electric lawn mowers, in exchange for turning in their operable gasoline-powered lawn mowers for scrapping. This $364,000 program was co-funded by the California Air Resources Board’s Air Quality Improvement Program and through the Air District's Mobile Source Incentive Fund.
From 2015–2018, the Air District implemented a Commercial Lawn and Garden Equipment Exchange Program for “the improvement of air quality in the Bay Area, and in particular, Contra Costa and Alameda Counties,” through the award of nearly $1 million dollars in settlement monies. Funding was provided to public agencies (such as schools and city public works and parks departments) in Contra Costa and Alameda counties to upgrade (by scrapping) older operable lawn and garden equipment to new battery-powered zero-emission electric equipment.
