The Air District is announcing the start of the Spare the Air summer smog season on Monday, May 2. Millions of cars on our roadways each day remain the largest source of summertime smog pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in the Bay Area. The Spare the Air campaign encourages Bay Area residents to drive less and look for ways to share, shorten, or change their commutes to help reduce smog, traffic, and gridlock in the region.

The Air District is extending the Spare the Air Alert for smog through Saturday, July 22, 2023. Air quality is expected to be unhealthy. Hot inland temperatures, along with motor vehicle exhaust, will create elevated concentrations of ozone, or smog. Continued smoke impacts from the Flat Fire in Oregon may also contribute to the formation of smog tomorrow.

The Air District is issuing the first Spare the Air Alert of 2022 for smog on Friday, June 10. Air quality is forecast to be unhealthy. Very hot inland temperatures, along with motor vehicle exhaust, will create elevated concentrations of ozone, or smog.

The Air District is issuing the second Spare the Air Alert of 2022 for smog for Tuesday, June 21. Air quality is forecast to be unhealthy. Very hot inland temperatures, along with motor vehicle exhaust, will create elevated concentrations of ozone, or smog.

The Air District is issuing the first Spare the Air Alert of 2023 for smog for Thursday, April 27. Air quality is forecast to be unhealthy tomorrow. Light winds and hot temperatures, along with motor vehicle exhaust, will create elevated concentrations of ozone, or smog.

The Air District is extending the Spare the Air Alert for smog through Tuesday, September 6. Air quality is forecast to be unhealthy. Ongoing triple-digit temperatures combined with light winds and vehicle exhaust are expected to continue causing unhealthy smog, or ozone, accumulation in the Bay Area.

The Air District is issuing the first Spare the Air Alert of 2021 for smog on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31. Air quality is forecast to be unhealthy. Light winds and hot temperatures, along with motor vehicle exhaust, will create elevated concentrations of ozone, or smog.

Smoke from Southern California wildfires is expected to continue to impact the region, creating hazy and smoky skies.

Smoke from Southern California wildfires is expected to continue to impact the region, creating hazy and smoky skies.

Strong high pressure leading to a triple-digit heat wave, combined with light winds and vehicle exhaust, is expected to continue to cause unhealthy smog, or ozone, accumulation in the Bay Area.

A strong high-pressure system leading to triple-digit temperatures, combined with light winds and vehicle exhaust, is expected to cause unhealthy smog, or ozone, accumulation in the Bay Area.

Wildfire smoke combined with high inland temperatures and vehicle exhaust are expected to cause unhealthy smog, or ozone, accumulation in the Bay Area. Smoke from Northern California wildfires is expected to continue to impact the region creating hazy and smoky skies.

The Air District is issuing a Spare the Air Alert for smog for Sunday, September 5, in addition to the air quality advisory for smoke that is in place through Monday, September 6. Wildfire smoke combined with high inland temperatures and vehicle exhaust are expected to cause unhealthy smog, or ozone, accumulation in the Bay Area. Smoke from Northern California wildfires is expected to continue to impact the region creating hazy and smoky skies. 

The Air District is extending the Spare the Air Alert for smog through Monday, September 6, in addition to the air quality advisory for smoke that is also in place through Monday. Wildfire smoke combined with high inland temperatures and vehicle exhaust are expected to cause unhealthy smog, or ozone, accumulation in the Bay Area. Smoke from Northern California wildfires is expected to continue to impact the region creating hazy and smoky skies.

The Air District is issuing the third Spare the Air Alert of 2022 for smog for Tuesday, August 16. The Bay Area will also continue to have smoke impacts from the Six Rivers Lightning Complex Fire in Humboldt and Trinity counties. Air quality is forecast to be unhealthy tomorrow, Tuesday, August 16. The combination of wildfire smoke with hot inland temperatures and vehicle exhaust is expected to cause unhealthy smog, or ozone, accumulation in the Bay Area. Smoke from Northern California wildfires is expected to continue to impact the region creating hazy and smoky skies.   

Today, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District is issuing the first Spare the Air Alert for smog in 2020. Air quality is forecast to be unhealthy tomorrow, Memorial Day, Monday, May 25. Light winds combined with triple-digit inland temperatures and vehicle exhaust are expected to cause unhealthy smog, or ozone, accumulation in the Bay Area.

The Air District is issuing the fourth Spare the Air Alert for smog on Friday, July 21, 2023. Air quality is expected to be unhealthy. Hot inland temperatures, along with motor vehicle exhaust, will create elevated concentrations of ozone, or smog. The Air District is issuing the sixth Spare the Air Alert for smog on Wednesday, August 30. Air quality is forecast to be unhealthy. High pressure over the region will continue to produce clear skies, light winds and high inland temperatures across the Bay Area. These conditions, combined with motor vehicle exhaust, will produce unhealthy ozone levels. Smoke impacts from the fires near the California and Oregon border may also contribute to the formation of smog tomorrow.
