The Air District will host a public meeting session on Thursday, October 10, regarding a permit application that was filed by Radius Recycling, formerly Schnitzer Steel Products Company. Members of the public are invited to attend to learn about and comment on this permit application.

Schnitzer Steel Products Company previously received an Authority to Construct for additional abatement equipment to control emissions from an existing metal shredder at its Oakland facility. Radius Recycling has applied for a Permit to Operate for the new abatement equipment, which includes two regenerative thermal oxidizers and two packed bed scrubbers. To achieve the large reductions in organic compound and toxic air contaminant emissions required by the Air District, the thermal oxidizers emit small amounts of nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxides, particulate matter and sulfur dioxide.
The Air District has evaluated the permit application for the proposed project and has made a preliminary determination that the project is expected to comply with all applicable Air District, state, and federal air quality-related regulations, including the health risks resulting from toxic air contaminant emissions. The preliminary recommendation is to issue a permit for this project. After considering all comments received, the Air District will make a final determination.
There is a 30-day period for public response to this proposal, which closes on October 28. If the public wishes to comment on the proposed project, they may also do so in writing or by e-mail. Alternatively, they may call and leave a telephone message up to one minute in length.
