The Air District is hosting a community summit on Saturday, February 16, from 10 AM–1:30 PM, at the City of Richmond Recreation Complex located at 3230 Macdonald Avenue in Richmond, to develop an air monitoring plan for the surrounding community.
The community summit will provide an opportunity for residents to learn, ask questions, and share information about the longstanding, disproportionate effects of air pollution. Lunch and light refreshments, along with child care for children 3 years and older, will be provided at the meeting.
Under the Air District’s Community Health Protection Program, the Richmond-San Pablo area was selected as a priority community due to its high cumulative exposure burden to air pollution. In accordance with California Assembly Bill 617, the state directs local air districts to work with heavily impacted communities on emission reduction programs and/or air quality monitoring campaigns.
AB 617 establishes a community-focused planning process, deployment of additional community air monitoring, and targeted incentive funding to implement cleaner technologies. AB 617 also includes new requirements to accelerate the retrofit of pollution controls on older industrial equipment, increases penalty fees for industry, and provides greater transparency and availability of emissions data.
