The Air District is extending an air quality advisory due to smoke from the fire at Schnitzer Steel in West Oakland. Smoke from the fire is expected to continue to impact parts of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties.
Smoke impacts have shifted north of the fire due to southerly winds at the ground level. If smoke continues through the afternoon, onshore winds will spread impacts to other parts of the region.
The Air District is not forecasting an exceedance of the national air quality health standard for the region and is not issuing a Spare the Air Alert.
If the smell of smoke is present, it is important that Bay Area residents protect their health by avoiding exposure. If possible, stay inside with windows and doors closed until smoke levels subside. Set air conditioning units and car vent systems to re-circulate to prevent outside air from moving inside.
