The Bay Area Air Quality Management District wants to make its privacy practices clear to users of this website. This page describes our practices, which are intended to protect your privacy online.
Information We Gather
We gather two main types of information: (1) personal information you may provide if you voluntarily participate in an activity that asks for information (i.e. sending an e-mail, filling out a web form, or participating in a survey), and (2) tracking information collected as you navigate through our site.
“Personal information" is any information that could reasonably be used to identify you, including your name, address, e-mail address, birth date, bank account information, credit card information, or any combination of information that could be used to identify you. A domain name or Internet Protocol address is not considered personal information.
“Tracking information” is information we automatically collect and store during your visit to our site: Internet Protocol address (of your Internet service provider and/or your computer), domain name (of your Internet service provider and/or your computer), identification of browser and operating system, date and time, web pages and services used, URL of the referring web site, and key words used in any search.
We gather some tracking information through the use of "cookies.” A cookie contains unique information a web site can use to track such things as the Internet Protocol address for the computer you used to access this site, the identification of the browser software and operating system you used, the date and time you accessed the site, and the Internet address of the website from which you linked to this site. Cookies created on your computer by using this website do not contain personally identifying information and do not compromise your privacy or security.
How We Use Your Information
We collect personal information only as necessary to provide our services. For example, certain features of our website allow a user to obtain a permit, register equipment, conduct an online transaction, or sign up to receive alerts or other information. These services will generally require that you provide personal information. Some of these services may require only that you provide your name, e-mail address, and, in some cases, a password to access an account. For services involving permits, registration, or payments, additional information will typically be required.
We collect your e-mail address only as a means of providing a service, such as replying to your e-mail or sending you requested information, or as a means of identifying you or your account. Under some circumstances, we may forward your e-mail to another agency for appropriate action.
The tracking information we automatically collect or store is used to improve the content of our web services and to help us understand how people are using our services. This information does not identify you personally and is used for gathering web site statistics. The information we automatically collect and store in our logs about your visit helps us to analyze our website to continually improve the value of the materials available.
We collect feedback information to use in improving our website. Information that you volunteer by filling out our optional online feedback form is used to help us enhance our website, and may be shared with Air District employees and contractors for that purpose.
How We Protect Your Information
The Air District does not sell any personal information. Any distribution of this information, such as to an Air District contractor handling transactions, will be solely for the purposes for which the information was provided.
The Air District limits employee and contractor access to visitor information to those who have a business reason to know this information. Employees and contractors are required to protect confidentiality and are subject to disciplinary action, termination, and legal action if they fail to do so.
Our website logs do not identify a visitor by personal information, and we make no attempt to link other information to information from our website logs.
All personal information submitted through our online transaction forms is encrypted using the highest available level of encryption (except for information received through our Agricultural Diesel Engine Registration form). This personal information is stored in a database as encrypted information. However, we do not encrypt incoming email or information submitted via the feedback form, and you should not send us information that you consider highly sensitive through e-mail or the website feedback form.
We use standard security measures to ensure that your personally identifiable information is not lost, misused, altered, or unintentionally destroyed. We also use software programs to monitor network traffic to identify unauthorized attempts to upload or change information, or otherwise cause damage.
You should be aware that the California Public Records Act and other California and federal laws exist to ensure that government is open and that the public has a right to access appropriate records and information possessed by government agencies. All information collected at this site becomes public records that may be subject to inspection and copying by the public, unless an exemption applies. However, exemptions exist to protect the privacy of individuals. Under the California Public Records Act, the Air District is not required to disclose public records that would constitute an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy, and the Air District will refuse to make such disclosures. Non-personal information requested or volunteered however is a public record once you provide it, and may be subject to public inspection and copying.
Your Privacy Choices
Every e-mail sent to subscribers of Air District newsletters contains a link that allows subscribers to easily unsubscribe and a link to the profile center that allows subscribers to change their interests or modify their subscription information at any time. If you wish to unsubscribe or change your interests, simply follow the instructions at the bottom of any e-mail. If you have received an unwanted e-mail sent by BAAQMD, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org or use the Feedback Form to report an issue.
We use “web beacons” in our email newsletters to track the aggregate number of emails opened. The web beacon does not collect any personally identifiable information. Users that do not want to receive email messages with web beacons can choose to receive their emails in text (non-HTML) format. We also track when a URL has been clicked inside of an email message sent by our system. We use this functionality to track which links were clicked and in what quantity, as well as the aggregate number of links clicked. This click tracking functionality does not collect any personally identifiable information.
